I began experimenting with painting on an iPad after seeing David Hockney’s work at the de Young Museum in San Francisco in 2014. It was fascinating to me to watch video replays of decisions he made while making an artwork. I bought the Procreate app and now delight in quickly changing a background color from yellow to violet, moving an object from one area to another, cutting and pasting unexpected elements to see what happens. Because the process is faster than using most traditional materials, decisions feel fresh, spontaneous and intuitive.
